COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Headaches, trouble breathing and allergy symptoms can all play a role if you are living in a home overrun with mold. So what do you do to remove it before it becomes a health problem?

You're going to need a white suit, gloves, a mask and duct tape and a little bit of courage before you take on crawling underneath a home to eliminate mold. "The mold that is there is heavy," said Ancel Hamilton. "It is concentrated across the entire crawl space surface. This one is a little more challenging than most."

The hole, and the spacing, are a tight fit, even before you add in the mold, heat and hours of work. "It turns into a rainforest," said Matt Gilpin. "Tremendous amount down here. Perfect conditions for mold to grow. Perfect storm."

There are many ways to attack mold, but BioTek Environmental uses a peroxide type of liquid that literally burns away the health hazard. "What it does is to destroy fungal protein of the mold," said Hamilton. "Penetrates the surface completely. Destroys and kills any dormant or vibrant spores that happen to be there at the time."

Workers spray down the surface of moldy wood, making sure to hit every inch of it. "When it hits it, it starts breaking down," said Gilpin. "It starts foaming. it's a lot, absolutely."

Next, wait three minutes and scrub away the mold. The difference is clear, but the work can take multiple days before the job is done.
